The Student Leadership Team of 2008-2009 will help plan purposeful programs, care for St. Marys UMC students, bring others to Jesus, lead small groups, and much more! The two most important things about student leaders are that they:
1). Lead a “no doubt” lifestyle that models Christ to others, and
2). Follow the example of Jesus and act as servants.
Student leaders must be at least high school aged, though there may be exceptions. There is room for 9 students on the team again this year. This means that some students may not make the formal team. However, that doesn’t mean that you cannot be a leader in ministry! There are many ways in which you can lead and I will help you find those ways!
Please fill out the attached application and review the commitments that you will be expected to make. You can turn your application in directly to me or to the church office. After you turn in your application, I will contact you for an interview. If you are a current member of the student leadership team, please fill out the complete application. Note that recommendations are not required this year.
Again, I am so proud of you for deciding to take this next step in your faith. Not everyone will become a part of the Student Leadership Team, but there are many more ministry opportunities in our youth ministry and more are in the works!

Where: Meet at the church and we’ll travel together to TNT Lanes and then to Pizza Hut!
What Should I Bring: Bring $15 (for bowling and for dinner at Pizza Hut) and don’t forget your socks!

We meet at 7:00 am and should return around 5:15 pm.
All middle school and high school students are invited to join us for the day. Bring $10.00 to cover admission and your tube—and a few bucks for the snack bar, if you wish. Bring a sac-lunch. If you don’t have your one-piece, bring a t-shirt!

Well, it’s almost time to take our students to Mid-High Camp at Epworth-by-the-Sea! Here is some helpful information for you as we prepare for our trip!
Here is a list of frequently asked questions concerning our camping experience:
Before reading the below questions, we ask all parents to carefully read the camp policies.
1 . When will I know if my camper has successfully enrolled in a camp session?
Applications are processed on a first come, first serve basis. You will receive a confirmation email if you provide your email address or a confirmation postcard in the mail when the application has been processed. In the event that the requested week is full, you will be notified that the camper has been placed on a waiting list.2 . Who should apply for a Conference Scholarship and how?
Families who are having difficulty paying the camp fee may apply for a conference scholarship. Call Diane Giles, the Camp Registrar, for an application 888.266.7642. Your pastor must authorize the need for a scholarship.3 . How much will the Conference Scholarship be?
Scholarships will be for half the registration fee. For Mid Highs and Elementary – $107.50.4 . What will check-in be like on Monday afternoon?
All campers must go through check-in to be properly enrolled in a camp session. Check-in begins at 3 PM each Monday. Camp Staff is not responsible for any children before 3pm on Monday. We ask that you do not leave your child to check-in alone. We suggest that you leave all luggage and sleeping bags in vehicles or outside the Brown Center during check-in. Each camper should bring a copy of the front and back of his/her INSURANCE CARD if it was not mailed. Copies of cards can be made at check-in if needed. Campers will also receive their cabin assignments at this time. This is also where all medication is turned in to the camp nurse. It is important that all campers complete the entire check-in process. After completion of check-in, parents are welcomed to assist their child to their assigned cabin to unpack and settle in for the week. The first scheduled activity for all campers is at 4:30 PM. We suggest that all campers try to arrive no later than 3:30 PM.5 . What is the right amount of spending money for my camper?
There is no set amount needed and much of it depends on the camper. A camper should not bring more than a maximum of $30. All campers usually have one opportunity each day to buy a snack or drink. In addition, campers have an opportunity to shop at the Epworth gift shop, which stocks t-shirts, jewelry, candy, toys and more. These items range in price from $0.50 to $20.00.6 . Is it a good idea to send my camper mail?
YES. Campers love to get mail from home. We ask that you do not send food or toys. A nice postcard or letter is great. Remember to account for post office delivery time (2-3 days) so mail letters by Tuesday of your child’s camp week. All letters should be clearly marked with the child’s name AND camp session (i.e. “Mid High Mania 2″). Our address is P.O. Box 20408 / St. Simons Island, GA 31522.7 . What happens if my child gets “homesick”?
After years of experience, the camp staff is trained on how to handle homesickness. In most cases, the feelings are mild and short-lived. The counselors, head counselors, along with the camp director and camp nurse, work to ensure that each camper has a great camp experience. In the rare instance that a phone-call home is necessary, the camp staff will initiate such action.8 . Can I call my camper or can my camper call me?
Phones are not available for use by campers. Emergency phone calls can be made to 888.266.7642 (8:30am to 5pm – Office of Connectional Ministries) or 912.638.8688 (6pm to 8:30am Epworth By The Sea).9 . Can I send any of the following items to Camp to remind my child of home: TV, fan, water gun, pets, food, candy, comic books, video games, etc?
No, none of these items are necessary for a fun-filled week at camp. Please be aware that if a camper brings any of the above “extras” to Camp, the items will be removed from the cabins and stored until the end of the week.10. If the church has agreed to help with the cost of camp for a camper, what are the possible payment options?
If you have completed an individual application then you must communicate with your local church to receive the payment from them, and then submit it with your part of the payment and completed application.11. What are my payment options?
If you have completed an individual application, then your camp fee can be made either by check or by credit card (only when online registration becomes available).12 . Does my child receive a free t-shirt when they come to camp?
Yes! Every camper will receive a free t-shirt this summer. On the application there is a place for you to mark what size they wear. Please make sure you don’t forget to check the appropriate box.13 . What if my question is not in the above list of “Frequently Asked Questions”?

Gathering Place tomorrow! June 7, 2008

Tomorrow we go to the Gathering Place for the 1st time this summer!!!
We meet at 5:15pm. We will eat at Wendy’s so bring some $ for dinner. Also, we will have a voluntary gas offering–gas is expensive!
We will arrive home by midnight.

There is a great line up of speakers this year:
- June 8: Kenny Grant – Sr. Pastor of Christ Community Church. Savannah, Ga.
Long time friend of The GP. Grew up in Brunswick, spent time in the Marines as a Drill Sergeant. Kenny has passion for teaching, and passion for teens
- June 15: Christopher Coleman – He was pronounced dead at birth, but miraculously survived. Though he struggles with cerebral palsy, Christopher Coleman knows his disability was a gift from God. His message will inspire you to trust God more deeply than you ever have before.
- June 22: Sarah Russell – Former GP kid. Sarah grew up in this area. A basketball star in high school at Glynn Academy who graduated in 2005. Sarah also played at Mercer University. Sarah has a passion to share how God equipped her, and then used her as a Christian Leader during her years in school.
- June 29: Stuart Hall – Nationally recognized and sought after communicator. Stuart has written several books: The Seven Checkpoints, and Max Q. Stuart is the founder of Dash student leadership. His passion is to see students live their life for Christ…right now, not later.
- July 6: Ty Saltzgiver – Funny last name. Great speaker. Ty is the Vice President for Young Life, a ministry that reaches students for Christ all around the world. Ty loves teenagers, and has a hilarious way of communicating to them. Author of “My First Thirty Quiet Times.”
- July 13: Michael Nyenhuis – Michael is the President of MAP International. MAP is a global missions organization that sends medical supplies to needy people groups around the world. Michael’s son, Jacob was tragically killed in an auto accident in 2007. Michael is going to share about the reality of Heaven, and the necessity for all of us to walk with Christ, even in the midst of tragedy.
- July 20: Les Beauchamp – “I was a Teenage God.” Les grew up the son of a military man. Most of his life was spent living in the Far East. Les is a 7th degree Black belt. His religion was Martial Arts. As a teenager, Les joined the Mormon religion, which believes if you live the right way, in the after life you become a god. Miraculously, he surrendered his life to Christ, and now pastors a dynamic church in Omaha Nebraska.
- July 27: Mark Fritchman – The Executive Director of The Gathering Place. A youth ministry veteran for over 15 years, Mark has a unique and funny way of communicating with teenagers. His passion is simple, Jesus, his family, and Teenagers.
- August 3: David Nasser – Author of “A Call to Die,” and “Glory Revealed,” David is one of the most sought after communicators in the nation. A tremendous story teller, with an amazing story of how he came to know Christ. Come hear David wrap up a summer Main Event series that is certain to be the best ever. We may have a surprise guest on this night as well.
We meet at 5:15 in the Ray Building and we grab some dinner on the way (often Wendy’s but sometimes we mix it up). We will return by midnight.
There are some new procedures this year as well:
- This year the doors will open at 7:00pm. We will not have to wait in line like last year to until the doors open–they will open earlier.
- We will be able to save seats, but only in the back half of the auditorium. The air conditioned tent will be ready by 6:00pm for those who come early.
- Remember ladies–don’t dress in a way that could distract the young men going to the Gathering Place!
